Course Outline

Session 1
Anatomy of the Breath

Learn about the anatomy of the breath, the difference between abdominal breathing and chest breathing, how the diaphragm works and why it’s so important to engage it.  Discover the connection between the diaphragm and vagus nerve and how they profoundly impact the autonomic nervous system. Understand the many physical and mental health benefits of diaphragmatic breathing and the profound impact it can have on stress and anxiety. Finally, learn foundational techniques for building awareness of the main muscles of respiration and strengthening the diaphragm.

Session 2
Being in Conversation with the Breath

Learn about the incredible often unexpected benefits of breathing through the nose, rather than the mouth. Discover how the breath serves as a bridge between your body and mind and how your environment or experiences can unconsciously affect the breath and nervous system. Understand the involuntary metabolic and emotional responses of the breath, and learn how you can shape the breath consciously to influence the nervous system and create a desired energetic effect (balancing, energizing or calming). Also, learn the 5 qualities of effortless breathing and explore techniques to work with the directional flow of the breath.

Session 3
Consciously Shaping the Breath with Valves and Ratios

Learn two powerful ways to consciously shape the breath – valves and ratios. Understand what valves are and the benefits of using them to shape the breath consciously. Also discover how to safely extend your breath capacity and work with all four parts of the breath (inhale, retention, exhale, and suspension) by using ratios. Understand how different patterns impact the body and how to skilfully deploy the right techniques, depending on what is called for, through the ancient yogic understanding of energetics. Learn the simple, but powerful Ujjayi breathing technique as well as two breathing ratios to create instant calm for the nervous system, body and mind. 

Session 4
Consciously Shaping the Breath with Krama and Sound

Learn about krama breathing, a technique for segmenting the inhale and/or exhale into multiple parts. Experiment with layering krama breathing with the technique of directional flow of the breath to enhance the energetic effect of the technique.  Also discover how to consciously shape the breath using sound on exhale and the physical and mental health benefits of this approach. Learn a simple but powerful anxiety-busting, mood-boosting technique known as brahmari or bumble-bee breath that is so easy you can do it with your kids. 

Session 5
The Energetics of the Breath

Unlock the magic of prana (life force energy) and pranayama (how to expand and direct energy). Discover the ancient yogic understanding of nadis (energy channels) and the unique aspects of solar and lunar energies in the body. Explore how this ancient framework of energy meshes seamlessly with with modern scientific understanding of the nervous system. Understand how the breath is a vehicle for vitality for the entire body and mind and how to direct the flow of energy in the body. Discover the incredible phenomena of nostril dominance and how to create valves at the nostrils to balance the brain and nervous system with alternate nostril breathing.

Session 6
Working with Solar and Lunar Energy & The Power of Breath-Focused Asana

Build on your understanding of the energy channels and valving of the nostrils and learn techniques that can stimulate either the right brain or the left brain and create either a warming, stimulating effect or a cooling/calming effect in the body and mind (and why you would want to use each.) Then discover how simple asanas (physical poses) and movements of the body can enhance the efficacy of breathwork and vice versa. Learn how certain body movements support either inhale or exhale, and enhance the effect of the breath, and how the breath can enhance the structural and energetic effect of the asana. This is a simple but systematic approach to yoga asana that is quite different from what most people have practiced before.
