A DIY Mind Jar is such a simple, beautiful way to introduce kids to mindfulness and meditation.
The glitter represents thoughts or feelings. Sometimes our thoughts and feelings can get stirred up and it can be hard to think or see clearly! But when we sit still and focus our attention, our thoughts and feelings can settle down, just like the glitter in the jar. When our thoughts and feelings calm down, we can see clearly and feel good again.
The Mind Jar is a beautiful visual aid for teaching these concepts but also a really practical tool for the whole family to use.
Busy minds, angry or frustrated vibes? Let your littles have a time IN with the Mind Jar to take some deep breaths and watch the glitter settle down.
You can even use it yourself if you find yourself feeling frustrated or having a circular argument with your littles you can say something like “I’m feeling frustrated. I’d like a moment to let my feelings and thoughts settle. I’m going to shake the jar and when the glitter has all settled to the bottom, let’s talk more.”
Here are the instructions and here is a little printable card to tie onto the jar! (You can print it as an A6/postcard size, punch a hole in the corner and tie it on to the jar!)
P.S. This is a fun project to do with kids or in a group (I went to my boy’s Kindie class to make them with the kids!) or even as a party favour.
