Let it be an experiment.

Here’s a recipe for a predictable life: Play it safe. Stick to the rules. Hang close to what’s been tried and tested. Insist on particular outcomes. Deem all other conclusions a failure. Also: prepare yourself for boredom (because predictability is safe but tedious and dull) and disappointment (because you can rarely control the outcome anyway.)

Or.

Let it be an experiment.

All of it. The relationship. The painting. The poem. The partnership. The business idea. The meditation.

To experiment is to be captivated by the joy and playfulness of possibility. To have the courage to tune to your instincts, sift through the possibilities and commit to just one (for now). To detach yourself from outcomes and emancipate yourself from the confinement of expectation, bias or judgment. To have the willingness to watch what unfolds with wonder and amazement. To open yourself to seeing the unseen. To welcome revelation.

The best experiments aren’t engineered to produce a specific outcome. The best experiments are bold leaps, fortified with intention. The best experiments are derived of curiosity, not expectation. The best experiments test ideas and trust that the truth remains to be seen. The best experiments are a process of discovery, not a mission with a map and marching orders. Because experimentation is an opportunity, not an obligation. Experimentation is an art, not a science.

And if the experiment fails, you’re not a failure. Because the purpose was not to produce an outcome. The purpose was the process of discovery. An audacious adventure into the unknown designed by a curious mind, executed with a courageous heart, fuelled by a daring spirit.

My advice? Throw out the rules. Trade in the polished outcomes. Blow off the hedged bets and calculated expectations. Choose the mystery. Head toward the uncharted waters. Feel the electrical charge created by fear and possibility – that marriage of opposites that make up the Unknown. Embrace that eager giddiness of discovery. Brew up big ideas. Mine your instincts. Arm yourself with wonder. Give it a go. Let your life be an experiment, a love affair with curiosity and courage.
