Dream specifically.

Dream big is something we hear a lot throughout our lives. But I think the size of our dreams is less important than the specificity of our dreams.

At first, you might disagree with this statement. But take a beat and marinate on it.

Consider one area of your life where you have a big goal or a big dream. Do you really know what you want? Could you fill an entire page with the specifics of that dream or goal?

If I ask you, right now, to tell me what you want, specifically, I bet you couldn’t.

We spend so much of our lives working toward “big” vague goals and dreams that we haven’t even defined! It’s no wonder we feel like we’re chasing our tails sometimes. Because you can’t achieve your dreams until you commit to them. And in order to commit to a dream, you need to know exactly what it is.

So stop dreaming big and start dreaming in specifics. Don’t just draw a rough sketch of your dream. Really take the time to dream in full colour. How you define it is up to you. It might be qualities or terms or even feelings. Write a story or a list. Fill a page. Sit with it. Erase and revise. Let it be a living document, free to be edited, full of aliveness and rich in detail. The more detailed and life-like you make your dream, the more your dream can become your life.

And like writer Alan Cohen put it, “asking for what you want is a prerequisite for getting it.” So ask. Specifically. Before you go chasing a dream, take the time to know what it is.

If you need a bit of help getting clear on what you want, here are a few resources I have found to be very useful:

Meditate!

Srsly. Intuition, clarity and focus are yours for the taking. If you’re new to meditation, pop over here for tools to get you started.

Know Your Purpose

Read The Four Desires by Rod Stryker (my teacher!) to get clear on “life purpose” thangs. Note: also worth getting the workbook to do the exercises in.

FInd The Feeling

Read The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte and learn how to set goals with soul. Hint: it’s all about the feeling.

Be Magnetic

Check out To Be Magnetic by Lacy Phillips which covers manifestation (just a trendy word for making your dreams a reality, no?) The How To Manifest pathway has good instructions on identifying and creating the “list” of dreams or things you’d like to manifest. An excellent exercise in specificity. She also tackles self-worth which I believe is such a critical aspect to achieving goals. Psst. If you check it out and it feels like a fit for you, you can use REFERRAL20 for $20 off.

I’d love to hear about what you’re dreaming about, specifically, so please feel free to comment below!
