DIY Full Moon Ritual

DIY Full Moon Ritual

The full moon comes around every month - ever wondered why should you stand at attention? Well, each of us is a microcosm of the earth, mini reflections of a world within a world, if you will. So by tuning in to what's happening with the lunar cycles, we take a cue from nature and use the powerful energy of the moon to our benefit.

Ever notice how people can get all cray around the full moon? Here's a theory: Our bodies are two-thirds water, so naturally we're subject to the tidal energy of the moon, just as the sea is. This can cause energy to be drawn upward, making us feel confused, uncertain, anxious and not at all grounded. So around the Full Moon we can focus on drawing energy down and out of the upper centres of our energetic and physical bodies, helping to keep the "cray" at bay.

The full moon also affects us by shedding literal and figurative light on the habits, blockages and subconscious patterns that are not serving us, revealing what was dark - giving us a cosmic flashlight to illuminate what is usually hidden in the shadowy corners of our psyche. Bringing into light what has been shrouded in shadow. Add to that, the energetic action of a full moon is release and closure, representing the outgoing aspect and marking turning points.

Collectively these qualities make the full moon an ideal time to reflect, release and get grounded:

  • Reflection: Take stock, evaluate yourself and your life and notice if there is anything you'd like to let go of. It could be a broken behaviour, a negative pattern, a grudge, anger or frustration or something that isn't inherently negative but no longer serves your highest good.
  • Release: From this point of reflection, we can leverage the energetic action of the moon to then do some spiritual spring-cleaning. Letting go, setting fire to and burning down what's no longer working.
  • Grounding: As a final step, making sure we're grounded in our bodies allows us to move forward in our lives with confidence and clarity.

If you smell what I'm cooking and you're keen to make the most of the full moon vibes, a ritual is where it's at. Why go to the trouble of doing a ritual? First off, because it creates a pause in the busy-ness of our life. An intentional moment. An occasion to (in this case) reflect and reassess or (in the case of the New Moon) to celebrate and manifest. Plus, ceremony and ritual lift the veil between the everyday and the sacred so that we feel more connected and in touch with ourselves and the world around us. I've said it before and I'll say it again...the more ritual and reverence you can create in your life, the happier and more satisfied you'll feel. So do it whenever you can.

Speaking of when - I've found that the best time to do this ritual is actually just before the full moon. The lunar energy is strongest the day before, the day of and the day after the full moon. If you make time for this ritual the day before the full moon - it's like you get swept up in the energetic tide and can use the growing momentum to be pulled in the right direction. So when errrbody else is feeling all cray on the full moon and wondering why, you'll be at peace, having already done your spiritual housekeeping. (Sidenote: the word lunatic rooted in the Latin luna from the belief that the moon actually caused insanity. True story.)

Ready to give it a go? I've created up a step-by-step 7 page Full Moon Ritual Guide outlining my personal Full Moon practices - the things I do to make the most of the full moon vibes. Plus I've created up a guided Full Moon Meditation to enhance your ritual. Click here to download this beautiful Full Moon Ritual Printable Guide and Full Moon Guided Meditation from the Shop.
