If you have children, you’ve probably joked with your mama friends about “Baby Brain.” You know, things like searching the house top to bottom for your phone…while it’s in your hand. Or forgetting half of your vocabulary – usually big, complex and intellectually advanced words like “bucket” or “spoon.” You’ve probably swapped stories of sleep-deprivation, exhaustion and next level fatigue. When your friends who aren’t parents talk about being tired, you laugh and pat their heads.
And while this is a source of comedy and camaraderie amongst mothers, it’s no laughing matter.
After having my second baby, I came across this article on Postnatal Depletion written by Dr. Oscar Serrallach. I found myself nodding along as I read the article. Yes, yes. Yes. SO MUCH YES. In the article, Dr. Serrallach puts a name to the fatigue, moodiness, exhaustion and baby brain that so many mothers experience: Postnatal Depletion. He breaks down the causes, symptoms and effects of postnatal depletion – and offers a three step-program for repletion. (Note: even if you had your kids 10 years ago, read it! Much of it may still apply.)
As luck would have it, Dr. Serrallach actually practices down the road from where I live. I’ve been lucky enough to see Dr. Serrallach for about 3 years now and I feel so incredibly grateful to have access to his guidance and expertise. He helped me recover from back-to-back pregnancies with my first two children and rebuild my vitality so that I was replenished, repleted and ready to rock for baby number three. And I must say that the difference in how I feel after having my third baby is absolutely remarkable.
If you don’t live in Byron Bay, you can still access Dr. Serrallach’s work.
